Billy’s Double Whammy Win
by Tony on Feb.12, 2010, under Whyte Racing
For most racers, one event in a day is enough and certainly they usually stick to the same discipline. But not for Whyte racer Billy Whenman. He recently took on a Cross race and an MTB event in one day and won them both with the Whyte Jersey on the podium. This young man is a force to be reckoned with. This is the report of Billy’s big day out…
Just two weeks before the national cyclo cross championships and I head off at 8 am to compete in a cyclo x race as a morning warm up.
I was lined up against a 100 strong field and gridded at the front. The gun went off and I clipped in and set off going at my usual break neck pace.
Breaking away from the off I was soon alone, lap after lap, but luckily the race was only an hour long race or I may have got bored without any company as I ploughed through field after field with very little woodlands to keep the mind occupied!
None the less, i had a job to do and onto the final lap and a sigh of relief was in order… although a victory is a victory the course wasn’t very challenging so I was glad to have turned in a good morning at the office with a victory for Whyte Racing before lunch.
Then at 2pm it was time for the MTB Race and I switched from my Wilier Cross machine to my trusty Whyte 19 and I was glad to be back on my favourite bike!
Starting off I was with three other riders, racing through the twisty, tight singletrack ! and down long sandy fire roads. A lot better racing than this morning!
My legs were feeling a bit sore from the effort this morning, and was feeling a bit fatigued. It was a five lap race and we are three laps in, still with the same riders, but they are looking more worn out than I am.
Another lap passes and I feel strong and as if I can push on the pedals a bit more! Upping the pace just a tad to see if there is a reaction, I nipped in and out, in and out of the trees, jumping a log and then sliding around a tight right hander. Then onto the fire road it was head down and gave it some beans… through a short section of woods and I look behind me to see no one! I had the gap !
I rode at tempo pace for the last lap to take a fine win a full two minutes clear of second place – now that’s what I call a great day for Whyte racing!
